Teaching

I was a teacher long before I was an academic. Today, teaching remains a central aspect of why I do philosophy.

Research

The common thread of my research is an interest in the scope of the moral domain—that is, in determining which aspects of our lives fall under morality’s authority and which lie beyond it. This has led me to explore a range of questions.

In my dissertation, I investigate whether the moral domain extends to the self-relationship, and whether it makes sense to say that there are moral and immoral ways of treating oneself.

More recently, my work has turned to another frontier of morality’s scope: the moralization of the mind. I am particularly interested in whether we can wrong others through what we believe, feel, or imagine about them, and whether we should (and can) refrain from certain thoughts, emotions, or imaginings.

Publications

My paper with Vincent Grandjean, "Moral duties to past-selves" was just published in The Philosophical Quarterly!

This paper is the result of many hours of intense discussions between a metaphysician and a moral philosopher and I hope you will enjoy reading it as much as we enjoyed writing it.

Talks

My next talk will be in New Orleans this fall, where I will present my paper, More Than Just Blame at the New Orleans Workshop in Agency and Responsibility
